There are not enough words to express the amount of love and respect I have for this young man, but I am willing to try.
Natsume Takashi is, by far, one of the most memorable protagonists I have ever had the pleasure of being introduced to. He isn’t like most and he is no where near perfect. At first glance, there isn’t anything particularly too special about him. He isn’t physically intimidating or strong, aside from the occasional mean punches and kicks he throws around. But there is definitely something very special about him and it isn’t the fact that he can see “spirits,” but how he stayed so mentally stable despite all the sufferings he went through as a child.
Anyone who has watched the show knows that life hasn’t given Natsume many reasons to be so good to others. Aside from being shunned and bullied by the students in his classes, he also suffered much mental and physical abuse by the very families that took him in and traded him off. All of that pain. All that loneliness. It would make any person become extremely cold, distant and selfish, but not him. Granted, it did take him some time to finally open up to others, but he did it. Those sufferings only made him stronger, more kindhearted and more determined to help others and to protect all of the people and things he cares for. He may be reckless and a little too selfless at times, but I can only imagine he acts that way because he doesn’t want others to go through the same pains he did. And if you don’t find that amazing and beautiful of him, then I simply don’t know what the meanings of those words are anymore. His development is, also, very special. For one, he learns to appreciate himself a little more. He comes to realize that there are people who care for and love him and that he deserves to be looked at that way. He becomes more aware of what weaknesses he has and is still willing to do what he can for others. He doesn’t run away from his problems anymore. Instead, he challenges them head on.
And most importantly, he changes his views of the Youkai/Ayakashi. He started out as a boy who didn’t want anything to do with them and thought of them as only nuisances. Then he went through many encounters and saw them as something more. They have hearts and feelings like humans do. They suffer from loneliness and pain. They want love, friendship and happiness. They are like us, only different. He saw them as his friends. Friends that he wants to help and protect at all costs. And that right there, is very very special.
Nothing makes me happier than knowing that he is finally surrounded by wonderful people who do wonderful things for him. That he finally found a place to call “home” and that he finally found the family he was so desperately searching for. He is finally happy.
So here’s to wishing that this beautiful angel continues to receives a future with lots of love and happiness. A future he definitely deserves. And I want to thank him for teaching me so many things. For changing my outlook on life and helping me get through each and every day. Once again, happy birthday! I love you!
